ROWAN'S COSTUME GALLERY

Rowan was the first of the Rocket Girls, a one-off project for an alphabet book produced in Brampton. Her costumes were the first designed in the time that followed the release of that book and the growth of interest in her and the other Pickets. I have not done this since high school. I have, however, looked at a lot of books on film and production design, particularly for sci-fi and fantasy projects and figured out the best way to do this was to create a single nude body template for each character and photocopy it. (This made for some memorable moments at STAPLES!) I then drew over the template and added colour and details. It was necessary to work from nude body templates because, as you can see, some of the clothes fit very tightly. I would block out the body parts with colour as I worked, or whited them out with paint or on the computer, where lighter colours like yellow or white were used. I think using this method has worked better than planned because of the ability one has on the website to see a row of designs following the same basic body template. You can then sense better how the body underneath interacts with the clothes on top and how the whole wardrobe works. On the hard copies, you have to flip through them to get that effect, and with all the scuffs and blemishes- mostly erased or softened up on the images shown here- they don't look as good on paper as they do on the website. One of my students asked me if I would make copies of the designs for her. I refused because the liquid paper mess and other changes just looked messy and would come through in any copy made.

So...enjoy them as they are here. It's the only way you'll ever see them, if I have my way.

Now, as for Rowan herself, you can see the range of what she wears here. More costumes, based on images in the main gallery, are coming soon. The descriptions are self-explanatory. As for the pose, it shows how most of her clothes work, but it made it impossible to design formal gowns for her. This bothered me originally, until I realised that it is unlikely you'd ever see her in one of those outfits anyway. She's a slacks person. That's all. Oh...and about the bathing suits? They're for show, mostly when she's in a sensitive public swimming area. Rowan is actually a naturist. Bathing suits are not things she would normally wear at all.
