EARLY IMAGES
When the idea for the girls first came up in December, 1999, they were given the nickname the Rocket Girls, based on the idea that they would be Barbies in space. The body proportions matched in the early drawings, and continued into the computer work done in Poser 4 as early as 2001. The images here are the very first drawings done of each of the first six characters. Rowan began the process, and I remember sitting in bed planning her out, with the idea of making her very retro looking, hence the rubber socket joints on the suit, which evokes Imperial Stormtrooper meets Matt Mason meets 1950s space pinup. Of course, the moment Rowan came in contact with the computer, that all changed. Below are the first images done in early 2000.
ROWAN'S FAMILY
I cannot rightly recall who came next in the order of creation. I suspect it was Virginia. I do remember that Fiona was the last of the original group brought to paper, and was designed as a young focus for little fans. Again, as the characters grew, Fiona aged dramatically. I now show her as a young adult, which makes for better writing possibilities in creating conflict with her flambouyant mother, Virginia. Naomi was born with glasses, but how she actually got them is best explained in the story "Naomi and the Orleans Mine". The second drawing of her is a more recent image, done as a title piece for the story. By the way, that's Mars in the background.
